Travis Justus Graduates High School

Travis Justus graduated from Burnet High School in May. Travis is the son of Mary Ann and Heath Justus and the grandson of Tex and Delois Heath and the great-grandson of Retha and Ivyle Magness.

Just How Are We Related Anyway??

The first cousin, second cousin, once removed, three times removed thing really isn’t as confusing as it sounds. Let’s start with the cousin numbers:

First cousins share the same grandparents
Second cousins share the same great-grandparents
Third cousins share the same great-great-grandparents
Fourth cousins share the same great-great-great-grandparents

The “removed” aspect denotes a generational difference — the number of levels away you are from a common ancestor, compared to your relative’s distance is how many generations you are removed from that particular relative. This isn’t about years — this is basically about the difference in the number of times you have to say “great.”

Below is a little chart to help out. Choose a relative, find a common ancestor, then in the green bar across the top, determine your relationship to this common ancestor. Ryan's Team State Champs!!!

Almost forgot this one. My nephew Ryan Scott's coach pitch team, the Poteau Rebels, were state coach pitch champs this summer. Ryan is the grandson of baby Jack and Phyliss Scott and the son of Jack Scott Jr. and Amanda Scott. Ryan (third from left- I think)

Update On Ceb and Annette's Family

Aaron Alexander, the husband of Jennifer Scott Alexander and Ceb and Annette's son-in-law has been promoted to the position of Heavener High School Principle/Athletic Director. Congratulations Aaron and Jennifer.

New Grandbaby on the Way!!! Kyle and Brittany Scott Ward (Ceb and Annette's youngest daughter) are expecting another baby girl around the first of December!!!!

News for 2010 and 2011

I will begin with my family branch since this is what I know and then will work my way out to other family branches. Please send me your news and pictures. Kelly and Maggie Scott's family - Two weddings and a new grandbaby.

Sara Scott married her sweetheart Danny Sullivan May 28th, 2011.

Addison Danielle-- Danny and Sara also have a new baby and Kelly and Maggie a new grandbaby. Little Miss Addison. Papa Kelly doesn't act proud at all :)

Speed and Linda Scott's family - A new baby on the way!! Their daughter Adrienne and her husband Bart Gilbreath recently announced that they are expecting their first baby in about six months. Congratulations guys!

Jack and Phyliss Scott's family - 2010-2011 has been a big year for Jack's family. Many memories have been made and milestones reached, the biggest include a birth, an illness and a wedding.

A new baby! Chet Hunter Hurst was born to Jack's daughter Lindsey and her husband Jim Hurst on March 11th, 2010. He recently celebrated his first birthday. We call him Chunkin, Cheddar or just what his big sister calls him, "Brudder."

Overcoming illness! Phyliss had surgery for colon cancer in the summer of 2010. She has went through chemo and is now cancer free.

A Wedding! Jack and Phyliss' youngest child, Pete Scott married his Sweetheart Candace Marie Standridge this year on May 28th, 2011 in Ozark, Arkansas. They live in Poteau. Pete is employed by AES power company and Candace begins teaching fifth grade in Ft. Smith, Arkansas this fall.

Mike and Mary Andrews' Family - A graduation and a salvation and baptism!

MaKaylee Andrews, daughter of Michael Wayne Andrews and grandaughter of Mike and Mary was saved and Baptised at First Baptist Church Heavener July of 2011. So proud of you MaKaylee!

Jordan Andrews, Mike and Mary's daughter graduated from High School this May. She will be moving into the Scholars dorm at Carl Albert State College this fall. Congratulations Jordan!!!

Peter Washington Scott and Uncle Ben and Uncle Tom

I found these pictures on ancestry.com and was so excited I didn't wait for permission to post them. So, if I am denied permission I will take them down (unlikely). This some Papa' Georgie's family and for those who are interested in our family history you will like these. The first one is a younger and better picture of Papa Georgie's daddy, Peter Washington Scott.

Here he is with Cynthia Cates Scott, she was his third wife. He married her after Papa Georgie's mother died. The child is her grandchild, whom they raised.

This is Peter Washington Scott with his son Tom Scott. Tom is James Thomas Scott, Georgie's half-brother. He was born to Peter and his first wife Elizabeth Hall. He is the oldest. Some of you may remember him as "Uncle Tom."

This picture has two of Papa Georgie's siblings. The back row is Benjamin Franklin Scott and his first wife (Christie Cates). The lady sitting and in the print dress is Georgie's sister Mattie Scott Stewart and her husband Albert Stewart and two of their children.

These last three are also "Uncle Ben" with his second wife, Melisie. Below is the same couple with their children: "Bill, Dale and Hazel. The bottom is "Uncle Ben" when he was older

Meet The First Cousin of Dumpie's Great-Great Grandpa (also named Benjamin Hawkins)

Colonel Benjamin Hawkins Dumpie had a brother named Lloyd Colonel and a nephew named Colonel Theodore, the name 'Colonel' is scattered throughout her ancestry her is why. Benjamin Hawkins (15 August 1754 – 6 June 1816), usually known as Colonel Hawkins, was an American farmer, statesman, and Indian agent from North Carolina. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress and a United States Senator, as well as a long term diplomat and agent to the Creek Indians. Benjamin was born to Philemon and Delia Martin Hawkins on August 15, 1754, the third of four sons. The family farmed and operated a plantation in what was then Granville County, North Carolina, but is now Warren County. He attended the College of New Jersey, later to become Princeton, but left in his last year to join the Continental Army. He was commissioned a Colonel and served for several years on George Washington's staff as his main interpreter of French. Hawkins was released from federal service late in 1777, as Washington learned to rely on Lafayettte for dealing with the French. He returned home, and was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1778. He served there until 1779, and again in 1784. The Carolina Assembly sent him to the Continental Congress as their delegate from 1781 to 1783, and again in 1787. In 1789, he was a delegate in the North Carolina convention that ratified the United States Constitution. He was then elected to the first U.S. Senate and served from 1789 to 1795. Although the Senate did not have organized political parties at the time, his views shifted during his term. Early in his Senate career, he was counted in the ranks of those Senators viewed as Pro-Administration, but by the third congress, he generally sided with Senators of the Republican or Anti-Administration Party. Indian Agent In 1785, Hawkins had served as a representative for the Congress in negotiations with the Creek Indians. He was generally successful, and convinced that tribe to lessen their raids for several years, although he could not conclude a formal treaty. The Creek wanted to deal with the head man, and finally signed the Treaty of New York after Hawkins convinced George Washington to become involved. In 1796, Washington appointed Benjamin Hawkins as General Superintendent of Indian Affairs dealing with all tribes south of the Ohio River. He personally assumed the role of principal agent to the Creek tribe. He moved to the area that is now Crawford County in Georgia. He was adopted by the Creeks, and took one of their women as his common-law wife. He began to teach agricultural practices to the tribe, starting a farm at his home on the Flint River. In time, he brought in slaves and workers, cleared several hundred acres and established mills and a trading post as well as his farm. His operation expanded until he had over 1,000 cattle and a large number of hogs. For years, he would meet with chiefs on his porch and discuss matters while churning butter. His personal hard work and open-handed generosity won him such respect that reports say that he never lost an animal to Indian raiders. He was responsible for the longest period of peace between the settlers and the tribe, overseeing 19 years of peace. When a fort was built, in 1806, to protect expanding settlements, just west of modern Macon, Georgia, it was named Fort Benjamin Hawkins. Hawkins saw much of his work toward building a peace destroyed in 1812. A group of Creeks, led by Tecumseh were encouraged by British agents to resistance against increasing settlement by whites. Although he personally was never attacked, he was forced to watch an internal civil war among the Creeks, the war with a faction known as the Red Sticks, and their eventual defeat by Andrew Jackson. During the Creek War of 1813-1814, Hawkins organized the friendly Creeks under Major William McIntosh to aid the Georgia and Tennessee militias during their forays against the Red Sticks. After the Red Stick defeat at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, activities in Georgia and Tennessee prevented Hawkins from moderating the Treaty of Fort Jackson in August 1814. Hawkins later organized friendly Creeks against a British force on the Apalachicola River that threatened to rally the scattered Red Sticks and reignite the war on the Georgia frontier. After the British withdrew in 1815, Hawkins began organizing a force to secure the area when he died from a sudden illness in June 1816. Benjamin never recovered from the shock of the Creek civil war. He had tried to resign his post and return from the Georgia wilderness, but his resignation was refused by every president after Washington. He remained Superintendent until his death on June 6, 1816. On his death bed, he married the woman who had given him four children over the years. Benjamin Hawkins was buried at the Creek Agency, on the Flint River near Roberta, Georgia. The modern Ocmulgee National Monument includes the site of the original Fort Hawkins.
